The American Staffordshire Terrier: Gentle Tough Guy

American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier is an athletic, strong and intelligent dog who excels at many canine sports, including obedience, agility, and tracking.

The American Staffie is closely related to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, although somewhat heavier. The original Staffordshire breed was the result of crossing the bulldog with a terrier to create the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

In 1936, when the breed was accepted for AKC registration, it was renamed the American Staffordshire Terrier to distinguish the two as separate breeds.

Despite the fact that they are only medium in stature, these are extremely powerful dogs, with a stocky build and a strong, powerful head. The coat is short, and can be any color, solid or patched.

If you’re thinking of getting an American Staffordshire Terrier be aware that they require training, and regular exercise. Their coats are low-maintenance, so they need only minimal grooming.

The Am Staff makes an excellent family pet. They are friendly and outgoing, and love interacting with people. However, they are also fiercely loyal to their family and will protect them – to the death if necessary.
