Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog: Canine Cowpoke

Australian Cattle Dog

The cowboy of the dog world, the Australian Cattle Dog, or ACD, is an exceptional cattle herder with agility, speed, and courage second to none. These workaholics will run all day, and are equally adept at working cattle on the open range, or in confined spaces.

The breed can be red or blue, with or without black and tan markings. They may also have a mottled, or speckled coat.

The breed has an interesting lineage dating back to the 1800′s. Australian farmers needed dogs to work their huge herds. They started experimenting with crossing Dingo-blue merle Collies, Dalmatians and Black and Tan Kelpies. The result was a dog with a similar build to the Dingo, but with unique markings, and a real appetite for work.

If you’re thinking of getting an Australian Cattle Dog you should be aware that these are working dogs. They need a high level of activity, and preferably, a job.

ACD’s build close bonds with their immediate family, but tend to be wary of strangers. They are highly intelligent, easy to train, and enjoy training.

Grooming is easy, with the short coat needing only the occasional brush down.
