Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois: Belgium’s Super-sleuth

Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois originated in the town of Malines, Belgium, from which the breed takes its name. Similar in appearance to the German Shepherd, the Malinois is an alert, highly energetic dog, which excels in a number of roles, including as both a police and military working dog.

Malinois colors range from fawn to mahogany, with black tips on the hairs. They also have a black mask and ears. Although often mistaken for the German Shepherd, the Belgian Malinois has a somewhat lighter build, without compromising strength or agility. An excellent herder, the Malinois also excels at conformation, obedience, schutzhund, sledding, and tracking.

If you’re thinking of getting a Belgian Malinois be aware that these are working dogs requiring vigorous daily exercise. They are happiest with regular activity and, preferably, a job to do.

Training is easy as they are highly intelligent with a strong desire to learn. They are naturally protective of their families and rather reserved around strangers, without being overtly aggressive.

The short coat requires only minimal grooming.
