Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres: Muscles from Brussels

Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres has a somewhat patchy breed history. The breed originated in Belgium where the early breeders were mainly farmers and cattle merchants, more interested in a breed to help them with their work, than in breeding pedigreed dogs.

As a result the earlier Bouviers had no uniform size, weight, and color. Nonetheless, they had enough common traits to mark them out as Bouviers.

Over time, the breed standard was refined to develop a rugged, agile and even-tempered farm dog with a range of coat colors including fawn, gray, brindle and black.

If you’re considering getting a Bouvier des Flandres, you should be aware that they need plenty of exercise, and should be brushed at least weekly to remove dead hair and matting from the coat.

You’ll be getting a powerful, fearless defender and friend who is an excellent guard dog. As with any large breed, it is advisable to supervise your Bouvier around children and other animals.
