Bulldog

The Bulldog: British Icon

Bulldog

One of the most easily recognizable breeds, the Bulldog is known for its shuffling gait, its massive, short-faced head complete with under-bite, and its adorable wrinkled face. Bulldogs are known to be gentle, affectionate dogs with a love of human company.

It wasn’t always so. The original Bulldogs were bred to be fighters and bull-baiters. They were longer-limbed than the current breed and were known for their courage and ferociousness.

When dog fighting was banned in England, breeders set about breeding the ferocious traits out of the dog, and within a few generations, the Bulldog has been transformed from a fierce fighting dog to a placid and agreeable companion.

Today Bulldogs are among the most popular of all dog breeds.

If you’re thinking of getting a Bulldog you’ll be getting a wonderful family pet who is excellent with children. They tend to be gentle and protective dogs, and require very little grooming and exercise.

Unfortunately, due to their short faces they are prone to a number of genetic diseases, and they are also prone to overheating in warm weather.
