Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff: The Bodyguard

Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a large, powerful dog, with a temperament that belies its intimidating look.

Originally bred in England to protect game estates from poachers, the breed was created by crossing Bulldogs with Mastiffs. The idea was to develop a dog with the size of a Mastiff, and some of the speed and aggression of a Bulldog (Bulldogs at this time were somewhat different to the breed we know today).

The resultant breed was a success, with the intelligence, speed and agility needed to catch poachers, but without the aggression to maul them.

Today, Bullmastiffs are mainly family pets and guardians who also excel at conformation, obedience, agility, tracking, carting and therapy work. The Bullmastiff’s coat may be red, fawn or brindle.

If you’re thinking of getting a Bullmastiff, you’ll be getting a fearless and confident defender who is also sweet-natured and gentle with his immediate family. They require minimal grooming, and moderate exercise. Training, though, can be an issue, Bullmastiffs are independent thinkers and can be a challenge to train.
