The Chihuahua: Mexico’s Little Big Dog

The Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog breed, but that doesn’t mean they should be underestimated! These tiny, alert, graceful dogs are prepared to stand their ground against all-comers, even those much larger than them.
The breed’s history is somewhat of a mystery, but it is known that they were the favored pets of Aztec aristocracy, and participated in Aztec religious rites. The name derives from the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where the breed is believed to originate from.
These days the Chihuahua is a popular pet, particularly with the rich and famous. They are charming, intelligent, little dogs who tend to bond strongly with one person.
Chihuahua coats can be either short or long, and they can be any color – solid, marked or splashed.
If you’re thinking of getting a Chihuahua you’ll be getting an excellent pet, well suited to city living as they require minimal exercise. Be aware though that there tend to be strains of the breed with specific behavioral characteristics – some are friendly, others can be aggressive.
Chihuahuas are alert little dogs with terrier-like qualities, so training is advisable. Smooth coated Chihuahuas need very little grooming while even the longer coated variety requires only an occasional brush down.
