The Chow Chow: Chinese Legend

The Chow Chow is a powerfully built, medium-sized dog that originated in northern China. Little of the breed’s early development is known, but what we do know is that Chows appear in pottery and sculptures dating back as far as the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 22 A.D.). They are an ancient breed.
Originally an all-purpose dog used for hunting and farm work, today the Chow is primarily a companion dog. These impressive dogs come in five coat colors – red, black, blue, cinnamon and cream. Coats may be rough or smooth, and the breed is also known for its blue/black tongue.
Some experts believe the Chow Chow to be the original ancestor of the Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound, Pomeranian and Keeshond.
If you’re thinking of getting a Chow Chow you should be aware that they are independent, with a tendency towards stubbornness, and are perhaps less eager to please than other breeds.
Nonetheless, they are affectionate with their immediate family, if somewhat reserved towards strangers.
Early socialization and training are important, and they also need daily exercise. Regular grooming and bathing is a must to maintain their double coats.
