The Dalmatian: Spotty and Sporty

The Dalmatian is a standout amongst dog breeds, the only breed with a naturally spotted coat. These versatile dogs have performed many functions during their history, including as a military dog, draft dog, shepherd, rat catcher, firehouse dog, bird dog, tracker and retriever.
But where the Dalmatian truly excels is as a coach dog. Dalmatians have an incredible affinity with horses which they retain to this day. The instinct to follow and guard horse-drawn vehicles remains a strong drive with the breed.
Dalmatians are alert and energetic dogs, with great endurance, speed and intelligence. But they also make excellent family pets, and are often found in the show ring, and at obedience and agility trials. Their short coat is white with black or brown spots.
If you’re thinking of getting a Dalmatian you’ll be getting a fun-loving dog who loves people and thrives in an active family environment. Be aware though that these are high-energy dogs and require vigorous daily exercise. Dalmatians are also productive shedders, and need regular brushing.
