French Bulldog

The French Bulldog: The Dapper Frenchie

French Bulldog

Despite the name, the French Bulldog actually originated in England. During the 19th Century lacemakers in Nottingham, England selectively bred bulldogs to create a smaller “toy” bulldog, for use as a companion dog.

During the Industrial Revolution many of these lacemakers moved to France, taking their dogs with them. The French really took these charming little dogs to their hearts and towards the end of the 1800s they became known as French Bulldogs.

Frenchies are small and muscular with a smooth coat, a short face and distinctive “bat” ears. They are renowned for their affectionate nature and even temperament. They are alert and active, without ever being boisterous. Frenchies can be brindle, fawn, white, and brindle and white.

If you’re thinking of getting a French Bulldog you’ll be getting a wonderful little pet that is affectionate, engaging and comedic. Frenchies were bred to be companion dogs and it is a role in which they excel, although they also fancy themselves as guard dogs and will warn you about approaching strangers.

They require minimal exercise and grooming, but you should be aware that they are indoor dogs, and prone to overheating in warm weather.
