The German Shepherd: Pet Detective

One of the world’s most popular breeds, the German Shepherd is a strikingly attractive dog with a wolf-like appearance.
The breed originated in Karlsruhe, Germany where, towards the end of the 1800′s, Captain Max von Stephanitz, and others, crossed various breeds of herding and farm dogs to develop the German Shepherd Dog.
German Shepherds were first shown in America in 1907, and spurred by the fame of canine movie stars, like Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart, were immediately popular.
Today the GSD is considered the world’s leading police, and military dog. Not surprising as these dogs are highly intelligent, easy to train, obedient, powerful and fearless.
There’s more to German Shepherds than police work though. They are also loving family companions and regular competitors in the show ring, as well as agility and herding competitions. The GSD may be most colors, but by far the most common variant is black and tan.
If you are thinking of getting a German Shepherd you’ll find the breed to be energetic, fun-loving and loyal. They are generally good with children they are familiar with and are excellent guard dogs who will protect their family to the death.
Be aware that these are active dogs requiring vigorous daily exercise. The coat also needs regular brushing.
