The Golden Retriever: Scottish Sunshine

One of the world’s most popular breeds, the Golden Retriever is an intelligent, affectionate dog, with a genuine desire to please.
The breed originated in the Scottish Highlands around the late 1800s where it was used predominantly for hunting. A certain Lord Tweedmouth was the main developer of the breed. Wanting to create a retriever suitable for the local conditions, he crossed his “Yellow Retriever” with the, now extinct, Tweed Water Spaniel. Later, Irish Setter and Bloodhound genes produced the retriever we know today.
In addition to being a superb hunting dog, the Golden’s working ability and even temperament makes him an ideal assistance and search and rescue dog. The golden-colored coat is the trademark of the breed, and can range from light to dark gold.
If you’re thinking of getting a Golden Retriever, you’ll get a family pet that is a joy to be with. Golden’s are happy, friendly dogs who absolutely love human company. They are even tempered, easy to train and good with children.
They are however, highly active dogs and need daily exercise. They are also seasonal shedders and the coat requires regular brushing to keep it in good condition.
