The Great Dane: The Gentle Giant

The Great Dane is a majestic animal, sometimes referred to as the “king of dogs”. These giant dogs are known to be extremely powerful, yet friendly and placid, earning them the nickname “Gentle Giant”.
Danes have a long and interesting history, with some historians claiming that dogs resembling them appear in drawings on Egyptian monuments from as far back as 3000 B.C. Descriptions of dogs resembling the breed can also be found in Chinese literature from 1121 B.C.
The origins of the modern breed, though, can be traced to a cross between the Irish Wolfhound and the old English Mastiff. This breed was originally developed by German breeders who wanted a dog big and bold enough to hunt wild boars. Later, the breed was put to work guarding property.
These days Danes are mainly companion dogs, and are also popular competitors in the show ring. Coat colors may be brindle, fawn, blue, black, harlequin and mantle.
If you’re thinking of getting a Great Danes, you’ll be getting an excellent family dog with a loving and gentle disposition. However, with any dog that big it is advisable to supervise them around small children.
Danes are not the most active of dogs and can be lazy, but daily exercise is a must. Grooming is easy, as their short coats require minimal brushing.
