Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog: Alpine Athlete

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog originated in the remote, mountainous areas of Switzerland, where they were used as multi-purpose farm dogs, driving and guarding cattle, and pulling heavy loads.

These large, robust and confident dogs have immense strength, but they’re also agile enough to perform their work in rough, mountainous terrain. The breed loves to work, and these days can be seen participating in hiking, carting, obedience trials, herding, and weight pulling.

The Swissy has a short, dense coat which is mainly black with symmetrical rust and white markings.

If you are thinking of getting a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog you’ll be getting a friendly, sociable dog who loves human company.

Swissys are sensitive, loyal and devoted family companions. They are calm and laid back, very gentle with children and with other pets. They are also alert, bold and vigilant and make great guard dogs.

House training this breed can be a challenge, it can take several months before they are reliably house broken. Daily exercise is necessary, but should not be too vigorous, especially in warmer climates. Grooming is fairly easy and requires only a brush down once or twice a week.
