The Japanese Chin: Adorable Oriental

Despite its name, the Japanese Chin actually originated in China, and is probably related to the Pekingese. These sensitive and intelligent dogs were bred for the sole purpose of providing companionship.
They were adored by members of the Chinese nobility and appear in centuries old pottery and tapestries, accompanying ladies of the Imperial Palace and warming the laps of Chinese aristocracy. Evidence suggests that you could not buy a Chin, and that ownership was jealously guarded by the nobility.
You could however receive one as a gift of esteem, or for rendering exceptional service, and this is probably how the breed came to Japan.
Chins are agile and playful little dogs who are particularly adept at learning and performing tricks. Their coat length varies, but most are white with black markings. They can also be white with red.
If you are thinking of getting a Japanese Chin you’ll be getting a bright, alert and playful pet. Chins are affectionate dogs who get on with everyone, including other dogs and pets.
Their small size makes them ideal for apartment living, but they still need regular exercise. Their flowing coat requires brushing at least twice a week.
