Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer: Mr. Whiskers

Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is a handsome, distinguished-looking dog characterized by its elaborate whiskers, unique profile and double coat.

The breed was derived from the Standard Schnauzer, and can trace its origins back to the 15th century. It was first designated as a distinct breed in 1899, and has since eclipsed the Giant and the Standard as the most popular Schnauzer breed.

Mini Schnauzer were originally bred to be farm dogs, with the particular task of rodent control. The little dogs excelled at this job and also proved to be worthy watch dogs, scaring off intruders with a bark loud enough to rival that of a much larger dog. This combined with a naturally protective nature, makes them excellent guardians.

Schnauzer coat colors can be salt and pepper, black and silver and solid black. The coat has a hard, wiry outer coat and close, soft undercoat.

If you are thinking of getting a Miniature Schnauzer you’ll get a smart, trainable and cheerful dog. Mini Schnauzers adapt well to apartment life, but they are active dogs, and need regular exercise. Their double coat requires regular grooming and clipping, but they shed very little.
