Norwich Terrier

The Norwich Terrier: Tiny Titan

Norwich Terrier

One of the smallest working terrier breeds, the Norwich Terrier is a stocky little dog with erect ears and a slightly foxy expression. Despite his small size however, the Norwich is a spirited terrier with a real sense of adventure and mischief. The breed’s wiry, weather resistant coat may be red, wheaten, black and tan or grizzle.

As the name suggests, the breed originated in the area of Norwich, England where it built a reputation as an effective barnyard ratter. They were also used to hunt foxes, as well as being cherished as a family pets.

The Norwich is closely related to the Norfolk Terrier. In fact, up until 1979, they were considered one breed. However, once the breed standard was chanced to only accept upright ears, the drop eared variety became a separate breed known as the Norfolk Terrier.

If you are thinking of getting a Norwich Terrier you’ll be getting a fearless and loyal family pet. The breed is friendly an affectionate and does well with other dogs and pets. Be warned though that the breed’s natural hunting instincts may cause it to chase small animals.

The Norwich adapts well to either city or country living, but does need daily exercise, preferably walking on a leash. The wiry coat requires regular maintenance, including brushing and stripping.
