The Scottish Terrier: The Sassy Scottie

Scottish Terrier

Known for its distinctive profile and hard, wiry coat, the Scottish Terrier is typical of dogs in the Terrier group – fast, alert, tough and playful.

The Scottie was originally bred to hunt and kill vermin on farms. King James VI of Scotland, was known to adore the breed, was responsible for its popularity in Scotland during his reign.

The breed was introduced to America in the 1890′s, and has been popular ever since. It is also the only breed to have lived in the White House under three different presidents.

Acceptable coat colors in the Scottie are black, brindle and wheaten. Beard, eyebrows, legs and lower body fur are traditionally shaggy.

If you are thinking about getting a Scottish Terrier you’ll be getting a gentle, yet spirited, dog that forms close attachments with its family.

They require obedience training, and daily exercise, but make sure they are kept on a leash as Scotties have a strong chase instinct. Also be sure to keep them away from your flower beds – they love to dig!

The coat requires regular brushing and clipping to maintain the trademark breed profile.
