The Vizsla: Pride of Hungary

A medium-sized, short-coated hunting dog with an attractive golden rust coloration, the Vizsla in a native of Hungary. The breed arrived in that country as a hunting companion to the Magyar hordes, when they settled there hundreds of years ago. Vizslas are seen depicted in etchings going back as far as the 10th century.
Vizslas are versatile hunting dogs, Pointers in type, but also more than able land or water retrievers. They are popular in both the field and the show ring, and also make excellent pets due to their intelligence, trainability and stable temperament.
The breed nearly became extinct at the end of the Second World War, but was first imported into the United States in the 1950s, where their popularity has continued to grow.
If you are thinking about getting a Vizsla you should be aware that this is a highly energetic dog, requiring daily exercise. The breed does best with an active family, and is lively, affectionate, and easy to train. The short coat requires basic maintenance, comprising a regular brushdown.
