Weimaraner

The Weimaraner: The Grey Ghost

Weimaraner

Known as the “grey ghost” because of its distinctive color, the Weimaraner is a graceful dog with aristocratic features.

As the name suggests, the Weimaraner originates from the area of Weimar, Germany, and is closely related to other German hunting breeds. It is also believed to have the Bloodhound as an ancestor.

Bred for speed, good scenting ability, courage and intelligence, the Weimaraner was originally used to hunt wolves, bear and deer. When large game became more scarce, the dog easily adapted to become a bird dog, an occupation he still excels at today. Weimaraners are also active participants in the show ring, and in a number of canine sports.

If you are thinking about getting a Weimaraner you’ll be getting a friendly, obedient family dog that is intelligent and easy to train. Weimaraners form strong bonds with their family and are excellent with children.

Be aware though that these are high energy dogs, requiring daily exercise. Grooming is easy, as the short coat is low maintenance and requires little more than a weekly brush down.
