The West Highland White Terrier: Diamond Dog

The West Highland White Terrier, or “Westie” as it is more commonly known is a feisty little terrier, renowned for its courage, determination and sparkling white coat. A native of Scotland, the Westie was originally called the Poltalloch Terrier, and later the Roseneath Terrier.
The breed was first shown in the United States in 1906 under the Roseneath name, but this was changed in to the West Highland White Terrier in 1909 and has remained so ever since.
Westies are friendly little dogs with strong-willed personalities and a hardy all white coat. Their character is typically terrier-like, and they are happy, curious, and love to be in the thick of things. These confident little dogs excel in the show ring, as well as in conformation and agility events.
If you are thinking about getting a West Highland White Terrier you’ll be getting a devoted, affectionate and faithful little dog who makes a wonderful family pet.
Westies are one of the friendliest of all Terrier breeds. They do however have a strong prey drive and should always be supervised around small animals. They are intelligent dogs, and easy to train, but can be stubborn, so training is necessary.
They are active dogs who need daily exercise. Daily brushing and regular clipping of the coat is also required.
