The Yorkshire Terrier: Mr. Personality

The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie as it is affectionately known, is a tiny dog. Nobody seems to have told the Yorkie though, because these little guys have really big personalities. Brave, determined, energetic and curious, the Yorkie backs down for no-one. Don’t be fooled by the toy dog label either, these are true terriers.
For all that though, the Yorkie is an excellent pet and forms close bonds with its owner, although it may not be as friendly to other dogs. The breed has a distinctive luxuriant blue and tan coat.
The Yorkshire Terrier hails from the English county of Yorkshire where they were used to catch rats in the clothing mills. Originally a dog of the working classes, Yorkies eventually gained favor as a companion dog to Europe’s high society. The first Yorkies arrived in America in the 1880′s.
If you are thinking about getting a Yorkshire Terrier you’ll be getting an affectionate and playful little dog who bonds closely with his owner but may be reserved around strangers and aggressive to other dogs and pets.
Yorkies are intelligent, but willful, little dogs which makes them a challenge to train. They are excellent watchdogs and quick to raise the alarm at any hint of danger. Unfortunately, this can sometimes make them problem barkers.
Due to their small size, they require limited exercise, but do need daily interaction with people. Short walks and indoor games are ideal The long coat requires regular brushing and grooming. Many owners prefer to keep the dog in a “puppy cut” which is easier to maintain.
